The Claude Code Leak: Accident, Negligence, or Signal?

The Mythos exposure and the Claude Code release were, by every available indication, unrelated in their immediate technical causes. The bucket misconfiguration involved a one-line IAM change during a routine storage class migration. The npm publication involved a regression in the Bun bundler's source-map handling combined with a CI script that trusted the bundler's output. What connects them is not a common cause but a common substrate: a release pipeline and a research pipeline that both relied on tooling-level correctness guarantees that had not been independently verified.
The compression is worth dwelling on. Seven days is not enough time for any lab to meaningfully reorient around a first incident. Whatever processes were tightened between March 26 and March 31 were not sufficient to prevent a second, unrelated channel from publishing something worse.
Technical Anatomy of the Bun Source-Map Regression
The technical substance of the Claude Code leak is worth a careful walkthrough, because it is the point at which the story moves from "cloud misconfig" (a genre of incident every large platform has suffered) to "the release pipeline itself was the attack surface" (a genre that is rarer and more consequential for a company whose product is software).
What source maps are, briefly
A source map is a JSON document that maps positions in a minified or bundled output file back to positions in the original source files. It exists so that when a developer opens a debugger on a production artifact, the stack traces and breakpoints reference src/agent/tool_executor.ts rather than dist/index.js:1:412987. The format, standardized as Source Map v3, specifies an optional field called sourcesContent, which is an array of strings where each entry contains the full, unminified text of the corresponding source file. When sourcesContent is populated, the map is self-contained: a debugger or analysis tool can reconstruct the complete original source tree from the map alone, without needing access to the source repository.
This design was a deliberate choice made to improve debugging ergonomics in environments where the original source tree is not available at debug time — for example, when debugging a deployed SaaS application in a browser. The tradeoff was always understood: populating sourcesContent means the original source code travels with the map. For internal debugging, that is a feature. For a public npm package, it is a disaster.
What bun build --sourcemap does, and what changed in 2.1.88
Bun's build command accepts a --sourcemap flag with several modes: none, linked (produces a .map file alongside the output and adds a //# sourceMappingURL= comment), external (produces a .map file but omits the comment), and inline (embeds the source map as a base64 data URL in the output). In all modes that produce a source map, Bun's default behavior as of its 1.x series has been to populate sourcesContent with the original source files. This matches the behavior of esbuild, webpack, and Rollup in their default configurations.
The regression in the version of Bun used by Anthropic's release pipeline for @anthropic-ai/claude-code@2.1.88 appears to have been a behavioral change in how the linked mode interacted with the --minify flag and the package's .npmignore file. Prior to the regression, when a build ran with --sourcemap=linked --minify, the resulting .map files were written to an intermediate build directory that was excluded from the npm publication by a default .npmignore pattern. In the regressed version, the source maps were written inline and the linked .map files were also produced, but the intermediate directory structure shifted in a way that caused the .map files to land inside dist/, which was explicitly included in the package's files field in package.json.
The result: when npm publish ran, it packed dist/ — including the .map files — into the .tar.gz that was uploaded to the registry. Each .map file contained a fully populated sourcesContent array, meaning that the entire TypeScript source tree of the Claude Code agent harness traveled with the published package. The total volume, once reconstructed, was approximately 512,000 lines of source across roughly 2,400 files, including the harness itself, the tool dispatcher, the permission model, a large number of internal prompts embedded as string constants, and a handful of test fixtures that themselves contained non-public prompts and tool definitions.
Why CI did not catch it
A competent release pipeline for a package like @anthropic-ai/claude-code should have at least three independent checks that would catch a source-map leak of this kind:

None of these appear to have been active on the @anthropic-ai/claude-code release pipeline at the time of the 2.1.88 publication. The absence of a differential artifact diff is particularly striking because the tarball for 2.1.88 was approximately fourteen times larger than the tarball for 2.1.87, and any automated comparison would have surfaced this.

None of these controls is exotic. They are the kind of thing a senior release engineer at a Series C company would consider table stakes. Their absence at a lab whose entire marketing posture is built on rigor is the single most damaging technical finding of the incident.
What a credible postmortem would have looked like
GitHub security advisories follow a predictable structure: summary, impact, patched versions, workarounds, references, and a detailed writeup of the root cause and timeline. The advisory eventually filed by Anthropic's team hit the structural requirements but was notably sparse in two areas. First, it did not disclose whether any of the embedded prompts or tool definitions in the leaked source constituted user data or customer-configured content — a question that has implications for the breach notification obligations of Anthropic's enterprise customers under a number of state and national data protection regimes. Second, it did not commit to a specific set of process changes with dates attached. A credible postmortem in 2026 for a company of Anthropic's profile would, at minimum, commit to the three CI controls enumerated above, specify a completion date, and name an accountable owner.
The absence of these commitments is part of what converted the technical incident into a governance question. A security-conscious community will forgive a bug; it is less patient with a postmortem that reads as institutional risk management rather than operational transparency.
The Mythos Leak: Architecture Over Implementation
The Claude Code leak has received the larger share of public attention, partly because its cause — a bundler regression shipping source to npm — is legible to the developer community that experienced it. The Mythos leak, which occurred a week earlier, is both less legible and strategically more consequential, and the asymmetry is worth making explicit.
What Mythos appears to have been
Based on the document names visible in the directory listings circulated after March 24, "Mythos" appears to be the internal codename for a research project on a new model architecture being developed in parallel to Anthropic's production Claude line. The ~12 GB exposed through the mythos-research-stage bucket included, by partial corroboration from multiple researchers who examined the dump before it was removed:
- Research notes in Markdown and PDF form, including multiple drafts of an internal paper describing what appears to be a mixture-of-depths variant combined with a novel recurrent-state routing mechanism.
- Training-loop diagrams and pseudocode for the RL fine-tuning stage, including reward-model architecture notes and a substantial discussion of reward shaping for agentic tool use.
- Partial weight metadata — not the weights themselves, but layer-by-layer shape manifests, sharding configurations, and optimizer-state descriptions that together imply the model's parameter count and approximate compute budget.
- A set of internal evaluation harness configurations referencing benchmark variants that had not been publicly disclosed.
- Several internal memos discussing the policy implications of the architecture, including a memo on whether Mythos's reasoning traces should be made visible to users or held private.
Critically, the leak did not include the trained weights themselves. What it included was the recipe — the architectural choices, the training curriculum, the reward model design, the evaluation criteria. For a well-capitalized competing lab, this is the more valuable information.
Why architecture is more valuable than implementation
The Claude Code harness source is interesting to a narrow set of parties: security researchers who want to understand how the agent's tool-use permission model works, competitors building similar harnesses, and red-teamers looking for exploitable assumptions. It is, at the end of the day, an engineering artifact. A competing lab with a competent engineering team can build an equivalent harness in three to six months. The value of having the source is a modest acceleration and a set of subtle design insights.
Architectural research notes of the Mythos kind are in a different category. A well-funded competitor that reads a credible internal description of a new architectural direction does not have to run the exploratory sweeps that the original team ran. They do not have to eliminate the branches of the search tree that did not work. They start from a known-good design and focus their compute on the optimization problem rather than the search problem. In a regime where the dominant cost of frontier research is exploratory compute, this is a significant acceleration — plausibly six to eighteen months of effective lead time, depending on the competitor's starting position.

The asymmetry between "public legibility" and "competitive acceleration value" is the essential point. The incident that will do the most strategic damage is not the one the market is currently focused on. The Claude Code leak is the story the developer community is telling because the developer community can read the source. The Mythos leak is the story the competitive intelligence teams at three or four other frontier labs are quietly telling internally. Only one of these stories will show up in a court filing.

The unanswered question: who read it during the 36-hour window
The Mythos bucket was exposed for approximately 36 hours before the public IAM binding was revoked. The fundamental question — and one that Anthropic has not publicly answered, possibly because it cannot — is who accessed it during that window. GCS access logs exist but are not available to the public, and the access patterns during the window would be determinative of how much actual damage was done. A bucket that was briefly listed by an automated scanner and then quietly ignored is a different story than a bucket that was methodically mirrored by one or more motivated parties. As of April 7, no credible claim of responsibility has been made, and no derivative architectural disclosure has appeared in any competitor's public output. The absence of a smoking gun is not reassuring; it is consistent with both the best case (nobody meaningful grabbed it) and the worst case (somebody meaningful grabbed it quietly and will use it without attribution).
DMCAgate: How to Turn an Incident into a Catastrophe
If the Mythos and Claude Code leaks are the technical substance of the last two weeks, the legal response to them is the governance substance, and the governance substance is the part that has done the most durable reputational damage.
What Anthropic did
Between April 2 and April 7, Anthropic's outside counsel filed approximately 8,100 DMCA takedown notices against GitHub-hosted repositories that the firm identified as containing portions of the leaked Claude Code source. The notices were filed in batches and, based on the timestamps and the patterns of affected repositories, appear to have been generated by an automated matching pipeline that looked for either textual overlap with the leaked source or filename patterns characteristic of the harness.
The intent, based on the public statements, was to stem the propagation of the leaked code before it could be thoroughly analyzed and mirrored. The execution was closer to a broadcast than a surgical operation, and the collateral damage has been severe.
The false positives
By the afternoon of April 7, the developer community had catalogued a partial list of takedowns that appeared to have no substantive connection to the leaked material. The categories included:

Name collisions. A Rust crate named
claude_codethat had existed for over a year and was a personal utility for interacting with public Anthropic APIs. The hypothesis in the developer community is that an automated matching pipeline over-indexed on common strings (variable names, common TypeScript idioms, certain prompt phrases) and generated false positives.
Each of these false positives, under GitHub's DMCA process, resulted in the affected repository being temporarily unavailable while a counter-notice was filed. The counter-notice process takes at least ten days to complete, during which time the repository remains hidden. For a security researcher in the middle of a coordinated disclosure, ten days is a long time. For a journalist reporting on a breaking story, ten days is a lifetime. For a genealogy tool maintained by a hobbyist, ten days is a strong signal that institutional legal firepower does not care about collateral damage.
Why DMCA is the wrong tool for this
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act's notice-and-takedown provisions were designed for a specific kind of problem: the unauthorized reposting of a copyrighted work — a song, a film, a book — on a platform that hosts user-generated content. The mechanism assumes that the identification of infringement is relatively straightforward (the file is either a copy of the copyrighted work or it is not) and that the copyright holder has a strong interest in the work's commercial distribution.
Source code leaks fit this mechanism poorly for three reasons.
First, the identification of infringement is not straightforward. Source code is composed of a mixture of genuinely novel expression, idiomatic patterns, and common-law boilerplate. An automated matching pipeline that looks for textual overlap will generate false positives at a rate that depends entirely on the thresholds, and the thresholds are difficult to set because the underlying distribution of textual overlap between legitimate and infringing code is wide and overlapping.
Second, the copyright holder's interest is not a commercial distribution interest in the classical sense. Anthropic does not sell the Claude Code source; it distributes it for free (in compiled form) through the npm registry. The interest being protected is trade-secret-adjacent: the desire to prevent competitors and researchers from analyzing the harness. Copyright law is a clumsy instrument for protecting this kind of interest, and courts have historically been skeptical of copyright claims whose purpose is to suppress analysis rather than to protect commercial exploitation.
Third, and most importantly, the DMCA creates a significant asymmetry between the takedown and the counter-notice. A takedown is effective immediately. A counter-notice takes ten business days to process. This asymmetry is exploitable by a party that files takedowns faster than counter-notices can be processed, and it is catastrophic when the party filing the takedowns is operating at scale against a community that includes many parties with legitimate uses.

The Streisand effect
By the evening of April 7, the developer community's response to the DMCA campaign had converged on a predictable pattern. Mirrors of the leaked source proliferated across jurisdictions that are practically beyond DMCA reach. A distributed archive, stitched together from a dozen IPFS pins and a handful of sympathetic university hosting arrangements, became the de facto reference location. The hash of the canonical dump was posted to multiple social media platforms with commentary that ensured it would be preserved regardless of any individual takedown. The number of people with a copy of the source on their local machine is, by conservative estimate, several orders of magnitude larger than it would have been if Anthropic had simply posted a terse statement acknowledging the leak and asking the community not to propagate it.
This is the Streisand effect in its canonical form: an attempt to suppress information that, by its nature, accelerates the information's distribution. In the context of a software leak, the Streisand effect is especially powerful because the community that propagates the information is also the community that writes the tools for preserving and distributing information. The takedown campaign did not slow the propagation of the Claude Code source; it made the source a cause célèbre and converted a subset of the developer community from passive observers into active preservationists.
The legal vs. ethical failure mode
The more analytically interesting failure here is not the legal misjudgment — plenty of companies have made bad DMCA calls — but the ethical one. A lab that has spent years cultivating the developer community as a natural constituency, that has emphasized its commitment to open research and to alignment with the broader AI safety community, and that has asked the developer community to trust it with increasingly capable tools, responded to an engineering failure by deploying legal firepower against that same community. The message sent by that response is clearer than any mission statement: when the lab's interests and the community's interests diverge, the lab's legal team will be the one setting the agenda.
This is not in itself unreasonable. Any corporation has a legal obligation to protect its trade secrets. The question is not whether Anthropic was entitled to respond legally; it is whether the response was proportionate and discriminating, and whether the cost-benefit analysis that produced it took seriously the reputational cost of collateral damage. The answer, based on the observed pattern of takedowns, appears to be that the cost-benefit analysis either did not take the reputational cost seriously or took it seriously and concluded that it was acceptable. Both conclusions are consequential for how the lab's stakeholders should model its future decision-making.
IPO Implications: S-1, Underwriters, and Disclosure
The events of the last two weeks arrive at an unusually sensitive moment in Anthropic's corporate history. Reporting through the first quarter of 2026 had converged on the expectation that Anthropic would file an S-1 in the second quarter, with a target listing in the late summer or early fall. The rumored valuation range was in the neighborhood of $150–200 billion, reflecting the last private round and the rough trajectory of the enterprise business. The leaks, and more importantly the DMCA response, have created a disclosure problem that the S-1 process cannot easily accommodate on the original timeline.
What the S-1 must disclose
Under the disclosure requirements of the SEC, a registrant filing an S-1 must describe, among many other things, material risks to the business, recent material events, pending legal proceedings, and any material weakness in internal controls over financial reporting. The leaks and the DMCA campaign bear on several of these.
First, the leaks themselves. A source code leak caused by a release pipeline regression, occurring within a week of an unrelated cloud storage misconfiguration, is difficult to characterize as anything other than material for a registrant whose primary product is software and whose valuation depends on the perceived integrity of that software. The disclosure will need to describe both incidents, their causes, the response, and the remediation.
Second, the DMCA litigation exposure. The takedown campaign has almost certainly generated at least some counter-notices from parties who will argue that their repositories were taken down without a good-faith basis. A small number of these parties may pursue claims under Section 512(f) of the DMCA, which provides for damages against parties who knowingly make material misrepresentations in takedown notices. The aggregate exposure is unlikely to be financially significant but may need to be disclosed as pending or threatened litigation.
Third, and more importantly, the pattern of the incidents raises questions about internal controls. An S-1 asks the registrant to describe its internal controls and any material weaknesses.
